… of Panama 1951 - 1955

HMS Gothic sails into Panama. A few years later she was decommissioned and the HMS Britannia became the new royal yacht.

Panama was HM Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's first port of call on their way to Australia in 1953 as part of the young Queen’s first Commonwealth Tour.

Queen Elizabeth & President Ramón drive through the streets of Panama City. A year later President Ramón was assassinated at the racecourse. No-one was every brought to justice for the crime.

In 1953 the canal locks had only recently become mechanized. Previously, mule teams had guided the ships through each section. To this day the engines that do this work are called "mulas" (mules). In this picture the Royal party cross one of the sections dwarfed by the waiting cruise ship.

My father escorts Queen Elizabeth II down the steps of the British Embassy. Behind them Prince Philip towers over my mother!
