Twenty centuries ago Julius Caesar brought the first summer visitors from Mallorca to Britain for the purpose of slinging stones at the woad-stained inhabitants, so making an enthusiastic contribution to the Roman conquest. Now the British show equal enthusiasm in their invasion of Mallorca, though their purpose is no more vindictive than to buy as much sun as their unaccustomed skins will absorb. But whereas sunshine is the attraction, the Balearic Islands have had a turbulent history of invasions and occupations by a diversity of races such as Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals and Moors, in search of material gains, all of whom have left their mark in the form of buildings, roads, language and culture. To know why and whence these people came, what they did, and why they went away, says Mr Cleugh, is to gain an insight into the charm which makes these islands agreeable not only to visit, but to live in. A wealth of legend surrounds the islands which has been the resort of piracy, the recruiting area for the Balearic slingers, the centre of East-West trade, and even a place of exile for prisoners of war. Such is the background to Mallorca which today affords a warm hospitality to its many visitors. Here one can find an escape from the past in the beauty and serenity of the countryside and the simplicity of peasant life, or in exotic, carefree enjoyments in the company where no questions are asked, no explanations offered. In paying tribute to the good humour and friendliness of the Mallorquin and to both the peace and gaiety of his island, Eric Cleugh, former British Ambassador now retired to Mallorca after thirty-six years in the Foreign Service, includes for the prospective visitor a few words of warning and advice seasoned with that delightful brand of humour already familiar to readers of "Without Let or Hindrance". Buying the book This book is provided as an Adobe Acrobat PDF version 4 file only (A4 and US Letter page sizes). The reason being, to be perfectly honest, is that it is just far to time consuming and expensive to go with traditional paper. This way we only have to cover the costs of this web site and the actually selling of the book. The price of the book is $US5. We feel that this is a very reasonable price and we hope that you do too. So without further ado, here are the instructions for downloading and purchasing the book
Note : We have found it simpler to download Acrobat files to disk as your web browser will often want to open the file itself. Something which you may not want it to do. So, to save the Acrobat file to disk, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) on the appropriate link above and from the menu that pops up, select "Download to disk". You will then be asked where to save the file and usually it is easiest to download to your desktop. Note : Unfortunately, we are unable to offer Viva Mallorca for the Adobe eBooks Reader due to restrictions of their eBook Web Buy server. We hope to be able to offer this format at some point although it is unlikely in the near future. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. |
